The first part of the Conference, from 12 to 14 April, will be a preparatory meeting of experts and partners of all sectors concerned, while the Conference of Ministers itself will take place on 15 and 16 April. The African continent is especially affected by changes in the climate. Already, the number and magnitude of natural hazards are increasing. All sectors of activity are concerned – in particular, agriculture and food security, transport, public health, water resources management, energy and tourism. To address those challenges, critical information must be generated and provided to decision-makers and users at all levels. The main purpose of the Conference is to recognize and contribute to strengthen the role and the contribution of the National Meteorological and Hydrological Services to government policies and initiatives for mitigating, and adapting to, the negative impacts of weather and climate. The Ministerial Conference is expected to endorse high level support to the expert-based Conference Statement from government representatives and to adopt a Conference Declaration for the development of weather, water and climate services in Africa. The Environmental Systems Division of The Republic Group manages international marketing and sales initiatives for a spectrum of world-leading providers of hydro-met remote sensing and data collection, analysis, nowcasting and forecasting technologies which are utilized for operational hydro-meteorological and aviation applications. WeatherBug has partnered with The Republic Group to identify global weather initiatives and enable international organizations to seamlessly implement WeatherBug lightning location and mesonet networks. WeatherBug and The Republic Group are partnering to commercialize WeatherBug Total Lightning NetworkTM systems and surface weather observing networks in a variety of geographies around the world. This will continue to expand the WeatherBug global footprint as the operator of the world's largest network of weather stations. With its proprietary network technology, WeatherBug has the capability to deploy networks for highly dense, accurate and timely weather observations and lightning detection around the world in a very cost effective and efficient manner. Kattron is a pioneer lightning data service provider, commencing in Australia in 1990, and currently operates a lightning network primarily in New South Wales. WeatherBug has partnered with Kattron to rapidly expand and enhance this network to the rest of the country, starting with a dense network in the Brisbane area. WeatherBug surface weather stations are also planned for installation to provide improved real-time, local weather information for the area. The hot, dry Australian summer weather contributes to the frequency and severity of bushfires across the continent. Lightning detection is extremely important for Australian citizens and public safety officials for every year bushfires caused by lightning strikes result in significant property damage and loss of life. Drought conditions and bushfires also widely affect industry including agriculture, farming, transportation and energy. More accurate lightning data, denser surface weather observations and better advanced warnings of severe weather will enable better preparation and response for weather related threats. The initial deployment will consist of 13 sensors in the Queensland area. Weather and lightning data will be made available to a variety of users including rural fire services, energy companies, mining operations and local governments. Ultimately, the WeatherBug - Kattron partnership will yield a national surface weather observing and lightning detection capability in Australia that will provide unparalleled weather intelligence for a wide variety of users. Editor's Note: This announcement was issued at the American Meteorological Society 90th Annual Meeting held in Atlanta, Georgia on January 17-21, 2010. More information on the global expansion and the latest products from WeatherBug can be viewed in booth #514. About WeatherBug January 2010 AMS 90th Annual Meeting The theme of the 2010 AMS Annual Meeting is “Weather, Climate, and Society: New Demands on Science and Services.” Recent international, national, and regional assessments, as well as recent observed trends, make it clear that the weather and climate of the twenty-first century is expected to be unlike the phenomena that the human and natural systems adapted to during the twentieth century. Currently, global societies lack the experience needed to mitigate projected climate change and weather extremes. Non-stationary (evolving) weather and climate present many scientific and service challenges. Increased predictive capabilities are becoming more critical for protecting life and property, promoting economic vitality, national defense, and enabling environmental stewardship. Weather and climate services, including communication with users of the data, data management, forecasts, projections, and education, are likely to play an increasingly important role in the development of socioeconomic and defense policy, industrial and military operations, and the motivation for the emergence of new economic opportunities. An exhibition will take place concurrently with the Annual Meeting. We welcome visitors meet with us in the Main Hall: For additional information about the show, please visit: http://www.ametsoc.org October 2009 6th International Exhibition METEO EXPO 2009 National Meteorological Congress Russia, St. Petersburg The National Meteorological Congress is organized by the Federal Service of Russia for Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring (Roshydromet) in St. Petersburg, Russian Federation, on 14 -16 October 2009 and will be accompanied by METEO EXPO 2009 - an international exhibition of meteorological instruments, equipment, and services. National Meteorological Congress, which will be held for the first time since 1971, will bring together professionals in the field of meteorology from all regions of Russia and CIS countries, alongside with the consumers of hydrometeorological information in all branches of economy.
